Tension Builds to full throttle

A knife in the back, a plunge over the cliffs, a syringe in the arm. The ingredients are all there for two hours of high drama and this Humdrum Amdram production builds the tension brilliantly to the shocking and unexpected end.

It all starts off tamely, with the larger-than-life Mr Davies raising a few laughs before we get down to the serious business of murder. One or two actors could have done with being a bit older - eminent doctors are rarely in their 20s, for example - but the performances themselves are full of feeling. And in this tiny theatre everything has so much more impact.

Most memorable has to be Gladys Wilcox as the sour Miss Brent. As the evil old spinster spills out a wave of hate, it's tempting to get up and throttle her yourself. Only in this play you can rest assured that someone else will do the job for you.
