The Memory of Water

Overview

HumDrum returns to Havant Arts Active as three sisters reunite on the eve of their mother’s funeral: a maternal neurotic; a paranoid doctor and resentful youngest sibling. Joined by their inadequate men-folk, the conflicts of the past converge, everyday lies and tensions reveal the particular patterns and strains of family relationships inspiring a range of emotions that can veer from misery to amusement very quickly.

Stephenson grapples with this kind of roller-coaster ride, veering from the darkly dramatic to the wryly humorous, with great skill in a bittersweet and highly entertaining comedy that skilfully charts the joy and pain of family relationships with insight and humour. The play has a raw spontaneity that captures perfectly the idea of ‘what normal people do in abnormal times...’
