Entertaining Mr Sloane

London is beginning to swing; but all this passes middle-aged Kath, her brother Ed and their old dad by.

Until Mr Sloane comes to stay…

The first of Joe Orton’s plays to enter production, Entertaining Mr Sloane is a blackest-of-black comedy which scandalised the West End when first produced. With hints of incest, bisexual liaisons and murder all coming to the fore, Orton’s text is stuffed with jokes and innuendo and razor-sharp wit.

Even in today’s more liberal and cynical climate the play remains powerful, disturbing and outrageously funny.

Not for nothing did the critics coin the word ‘Ortonesque’.
